 Course Information

Under the guidelines of the Orton-Gillingham Academy we offer a 8.5 day training course for 1:1 intervention (both Associate Part A and Part B) .

This Orton-Gillingham Academy Associate Level course is designed for teachers specifically interested in teaching students with Dyslexia or a Language-Based Learning Disability or Reading/Spelling Difficulty.

Teachers will learn to work in a 1:1 setting using diagnostic and prescriptive strategies to allow for maximum student growth. The course includes all topics :

1. Reading Acquisition in All Learners including the brain basis of reading and the essential components of good reading instruction.
2. Dyslexia
3. The Orton-Gillingham Approach
4. Assessment
5. The Lesson Plan
6. Adaptation of Orton-Gillingham for Classroom Instruction

  • use the Orton-Gillingham approach in an intervention setting

  • specialized individualized tutoring

  • dyslexia and reading disorders

  • strategies for multi-sensory instruction

  • formal and informal testing

  • how to use information for tutorials and lessons

  • how to plan an Orton-Gillingham lesson

  • fundamental elements of the Orton-Gillingham approach including an introduction to phonology, basic to advanced phonics and Latin morphology

  • This course is imperative for Special Education teachers working with students who have IEP’s and not achieving proficiency.

  • Learning to read and interpret neuropsychological testing

  • Grammar and writing skills

  • Vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency

  • Mock tutoring session with evaluation and critique

Associate Part A - 30+ coursework hours (Anglo-Saxon + OG Fundamentals)

Associate Part B- 30+ coursework hours (Latin, Grammar, Written Composition, and more)

Materials:

**All necessary materials for both Associate Part A and Part B are provided in the course fees**

Associate Part A Course registration includes online resources and hardcopies of 2 Basic Phonics and Anglo-Saxon Morphology guidebooks and phonics grapheme/phoneme deck.

Associate Part B Course registration fee includes online materials plus 1 Latin Guidebook and 1 Latin morphology card decks.

All will be mailed to you upon receipt of registration fees.

We suggest purchasing the Gillingham Manual, by A. Gillingham & B. Stillman (8th Edition). This is an invaluable reference and resource for implementation, and is NECESSARY for anyone seeking accreditation (summarizing the manual, chapter-by-chapter, is a required part of the process).

Accreditation:

  • Completion of formal observations. Practicum must be completed within 2 years of course work.

  • Associate Practicum - 10 observations for at least 8 months

  • Associate readings provided in course

  • Associate requires proof of completion of either Subscribers OGA course (at trainee’s cost, 10 hours) or the Shaywitz’s  Overcoming Dyslexia Yale University Coursera course (free , 12 hours) AND Gillingham Manual summary

A Bachelor’s degree is also required for Associate Level accreditation with the Orton-Gillingham Academy.

ALL DETAILS OF FORMAL PRACTICUM WILL BE OUTLINED DURING COURSE. This can be completed online or in person.  First 3 observations for Associate practicum can be a small/large group delivery.

This is an accredited course approved by the  Orton Gillingham Academy and taught by a highly experienced OGA Fellow/FIT. Many teachers choose to take this course but do not choose to become accredited by the Academy. Teachers wanting to become accredited with the Orton-Gillingham Academy must complete formal practicum, read required course materials as well as register as a member with the Orton-Gillingham Academy.
