We suggest purchasing the Gillingham Manual, by A. Gillingham & B. Stillman (8th Edition). This is an invaluable reference and resource for implementation, and is NECESSARY for anyone seeking accreditation (summarizing the manual, chapter-by-chapter, is a required part of the process).

Accreditation: Must complete both Associate Part A and B

Associate Level accreditation with Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) requires additional lesson plans, formal observation practicum, and coursework plus assigned reading. Practicum must be completed within 2 years of coursework.

ALL DETAILS OF FORMAL PRACTICUM WILL BE OUTLINED DURING COURSE.

Associate Practicum - 10 observations for at least 8 months

This is an accredited course approved by the  Orton Gillingham Academy and taught by a highly experienced OGA Fellow/FIT. Many teachers choose to take this course but do not choose to become accredited by the Academy. Teachers wanting to become accredited with the Orton-Gillingham Academy must complete formal practicum, read required course materials as well as register as a member with the Orton-Gillingham Academy..

For those who have completed coursework or a portion of a practicum but have not yet obtained certification, this experience may be referred to as professional development. However, it should not be represented as an OGA certification accreditation or imply credentialing by the Academy.

From the Fellow Standards for Professional Practice (found in the member section of the OGA website):

Coursework alone does not mean that an individual is OGA certified/accredited.  Subscriber member coursework is informational only and is NOT considered an OGA credentialed level.  All other levels of certification require a practicum component.

Trainees cannot be referred to as OGA trained tutors/teachers unless they complete a full Academy training that includes all coursework, practicum, and certification through the Academy, as clearly outlined in the Academy Curriculum Handbook.
